Guru Nanak Jayanti: Let's Celebrate it in its True Essence

Guru Nanak was the first guru of the Sikhs. Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Parab is celebrated on the full moon day of Kartika. It is all about celebrating the birth anniversary of a great saint like Guru Nanak, who will always be remembered as one of the greatest social reformers, preachers and saints. Although, I am not a Sikh, I always eagerly wait for this sacred festival. This is because, I simply love the prasad and food which are distributed through free lungers, all across the country, and even abroad. There are pandals at different places to organize free lungers and distribute prasad. Visiting a Gurudwara on this auspicious occasion is also very exciting. But, of late, I have started realizing that there is more to this festival than just eating at free lungers.

Guru Nanak taught mankind non-violence, love and unity. Are we following it? I don't think so. Today, there are communal riots, regionalism and hatred everywhere in India. Why this kolaveri, Dhanush?

Dhanush, the new generation poetu, has taken music lovers, especially those young at the heart, by awe with his latest song, 'Why this kolaveri di...' from '3', his pet project that is being directed by his wife Aishwarya Dhanush. He shares screen space with Shruti Haasan in the film.

Even as two songs with colloquial lyrics from 'Mayakkam Enna' are sky-rocketing the charts, this song has come as yet another surprise from the National Award winning actor. Tunes for '3' have been composed by debutant Anirudh, who we must say, has managed to make a good impact with his very first single, especially in social networking sites.

The rough cut of the song was leaked and created waves in the internet. Following which, making the best of this response, the makers released the official version of the song which is way better than the rough cut in every aspect. They also released the making of the song, which has received more than one lakh views overnight!

If the rest of the album is to be as entertaining as this single track, Anirudh is sure here to stay!

Children's Day and Child Labor: A Picture in Contrast

The festive spirit in India has always held me in thrall. Talking of festivals that are a celebration of individuality, one cannot forget the Children's Day. I still remember my scholastic days when we were informed a week earlier about the programmes that will mark the Children's Day celebration in the school, and when even the most shy guy/girl in the class would raise hands to enter his/her name in various competitions. I shall always be thankful to late Ex-Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, whose love for children resulted in dedicating a special day- November 14, Nehru's birthday- for celebration of the spirit of childhood.

As we grow up, we tend to probe into the meanings of these special days. What I considered a day for celebration, has hence become a day of purpose – the underlying meaning of Children' Day. Is Children's Day really worth when millions of children in India toil in factories or beg in the streets and are forced to pick rags as usual to feed their stomach, even as their well-off counterparts partake of the festive spirit of Children's Day? Sukhram Arrested and Jailed for 5 Years | Former Telecom Minister Sukhram Arrested News

Former Telecom Minister Sukhram was today kicked and slapped by a man inside the premises of a Delhi court just moments after he was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment in connection with a corruption case dating back to 1996.The assailant identified as Harvinder Singh was immediately nabbed and whisked away by the police.He had been thrown out of the court earlier in the day after he misbehaved with the former minister and complained about the court order taking so long.

Sukhram has been convicted yesterday by the court for taking Rs. 3 lakh as bribe to give a lucrative contract to a private firm in 1996.Apart from the five year jail term he will also have to pay a fine of Rs. 4 lakh.The former Telecom Minister had earlier pleaded for leniency in the court on grounds of his old age while the CBI called him a habitual offender and sought maximum punishment for him.

Sukhram 86 had been held guilty for misusing his official position during his tenure as Telecom Minister in P V Narasimha Rao Cabinet in giving a contract worth Rs. 30 crore to private firm Haryana Telecom Limited to supply 3.5 Lakh Conductor Kilometers of Polythene Insulated Jelly Filled cables to the telecom department.

Reacting to the Sukhram verdict BJP president Nitin Gadkari said The way in which the court has taken the time to punish the guilty is important.The judicial system needs changes otherwise people will lose faith.Sukhram was charged on Thursday under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code.These offences under which he has been convicted usually entail a ma [...]

Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id) Celebrated to commemorate those who lost their life in 26/11 Mumbai Terror attack

Id-ul-Zuha or Bakrid is one of the major Muslim festivals celebrated all over the world. It is celebrated in honour of Prophet Ibrahim, who willingly agreed to sacrifice his son for God. Thousands of Muslims offer their prayers for peace and prosperity on this auspicious day. Exchange of greetings and gifts is also a common feature of this festival, besides the sacrifice of goats.

This year, although Bakrid has been celebrated all across India, the celebrations have been kept much low profile. This gesture has not been shown by a handful of Indian Muslims, but every single Muslim in India, who strongly condemns the recent 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Addressing the attacks as unholy and completely non-Islamic, Indian Muslims joined their hands to fight against terror. National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was established by the Government of India in the year 1961 with a view to bringing about qualitative improvement in school education in the country.No sooner the Council was set up than it mounted a number of programmes in this direction.One such programme was to identify and nurture the talented students.This programme took up the shape of a scheme called National Science Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) in the year 1963 which provided for the identification of talented students and awarding them with scholarships.

During the first year of the implementation of the scheme it was confined to the Union Territory of Delhi wherein only 10 scholarships were awarded to the Class XI students.In the year 1964 the scheme was extended to all the states and the union territories in the country with 350 scholarships for the students of Class XI.These scholarships were awarded on the basis of a written examination, a project report and interview.The written examination comprised the Science Aptitude Test and an Essay on a given scientific theme.The candidates were to submit the project report at the time of the written examination.

Sports Minister Ajay Maken wants the match fixing claims made by former cricketer Vinod Kambli investigated by the BCCI and says his Ministry might step in if the Cricket Board doesn’t order a probe.Kambli had earlier sparked controversy by claiming that something was amiss in India loss in the 1996 World Cup semifinal against Sri Lanka and Maken said the claim should be investigated for all its worth.The BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla however said that he will not give any attention to Kambli false claims.

When a player of the team has made a charge it should be thoroughly investigated.People of the country have the right to know what exactly happened.Whether the accusations made by the player are true or false the people have the right to know Maken said on the sidelines of an NSS felicitation ceremony here.So it should be properly investigated and if something wrong has happened then the culprits should be punished he said.The Minister said if the BCCI doesn’t act the sports ministry might conduct an inquiry of its own.

We will see As you know the BCCI has not come to the Sports Ministry for any recognition so far but I would want whatever agency is there BCCI should order a probe into it.If the BCCI doesn’t conduct a probe we will look at it he said.Maken said he was pained by the claims made by Kambli and said if true it would be extremely unfortunate for the game of cricket.
